Picasso, Works Currently in Richmond, Virginia

Fine Arts

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts recently announced their showing of Picasso’s masterpieces from the National Picasso Museum in France. The works are going on a seven city tour across the globe. The show runs until May 15th of 2011 so there is still plenty of time to visit the gallery in Richmond.
The works are from Picasso’s greatest periods of his eighty year career. The collection holds more than 150 pieces and many are from the artist’s personal collection. This is definitely one of those showings that happen once in a lifetime. To see so many of Picasso’s works in one place is quite a feat and should be seen if you can make it.

Signed Works of Art

The showing of these works is like looking at the life history of the artist himself. There are portraits of his friends, mistresses and some of the most intimate moments of the artist’s life, including the deathbed portrait of Picasso’s friend Carlos Casagemas. Picasso worked in so many different mediums including oil on canvas, carved wood, watercolors, ink and pencil and even printmaking.
Picasso influenced and contributed to many art movements and co-created Cubism. So many of the artist’s works being in one place and showing off his versatile use of mediums should not be missed. These are world renowned works and for them to be in Richmond for such an extended period should bring people from all over the U.S. to visit.

Works of Art

This is truly a momentous occasion, as the works only show in Paris normally. Currently the museum in which they are normally housed is undergoing some renovations. The work on the museum is giving the rest of the world a real chance to finally see so many of the master’s works together in one place.
Picasso’s history is well documented in books and movies. He is one of the most beloved and in some cases, hated artists in history. He truly had a rich life full of gusto and glory as well as tragedy. If you have any interest in seeing these wonderful works, then make sure to check them out at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts where they will be showing until May of 2011.
