Series of paintings – when a single surface isn’t enough

There are many artists who enjoy making a series of paintings. However, a person should know the difference between a series of paintings and paintings that are created with the same style. Usually an artist will have his or her own distinct style. This doesn’t mean that their paintings are grouped together. In order for two or more paintings to be consideed a series, and artist must have created a complete plan for the entire group.

Art Series

Many artists have created such paintings. The most popular series of paintings are those that require all the pieces to be present in order for the art work to make sense. Rania Hassan is a very popular multi media artist. Two paintings are placed next to each other. Each painting contains one woman with knitting needles in her hands. The two paintings are connected with knitted fabric. She has made a wide variety of these twin paintings. Her series represents how knitting can connect two women, even if they are in their own worlds.

Fine Art

Cathy Callan is the creator of the True Fish series. The True Fish include nine separate paintings of sea horses. In each painting, a sea horse is painted against a specific surface – grass, barley, emerald, velvet, the color venetian red, pebbles, on an invite, the color green, and on a CD case. Callan’s work is an example of a series of paintings that make sense on their own. But their true beauty is presented when they are viewed together.

Andy Warhol is best known for his series of thirty two Campbell soup cans. Each of the paintings is  20 x 16 inches (51 X 41 cm). The paintings were created with synthetic polymer paint in 1962.

Whenever a series of similar paintings are created over a longer period of time, these works are considered to belong to an artist’s Period. For example, Picasso’s blue period – when most of his paintings were painted mostly with a wide variety of blue colors. These paintings were made within three years – 1901 – 1904. The way Picasso painted during that period was a result of Casagemas’s suicide, who was his close friend. Picasso worked in Casagemas’s studio for three weeks after his death.

Art History

Some paintings are created in a series that tells a story – this is similar to today’s comics, but not quite the same. The most well recognized such paintings are usually religious and in the form of frescoes. The Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo, for example, tells the story of the book of Genesis from the Holy Bible. The Creation of Adam is one of the most well recognized images in the world. A fresco can sometimes be viewed as one painting, but usually it is broken down into many smaller ones.

Artists’ creativity is inspiring. Not all paintings are created on a canvas. Some artists prefer to work on wood, while others choose rock as their surface. New ideas are constantly being created, and new series that viewers can enjoy are the result of that.
